Marathon — PS5 & PS5 Pro performance
Technical analysis last updated
Marathon takes the competitive-shooter approach: one graphics mode, no compromises to pick between, and a frame rate that simply holds. Both PS5 and PS5 Pro run at a locked 60fps with an effectively identical performance profile — Bungie clearly prioritised parity. What separates the machines is image quality. On base PS5 you choose between CMAA and FSR for anti-aliasing and scaling, and in practice the two look and perform much the same. PS5 Pro adds PSSR as a third and default option, and Sony states the Pro build renders from an internal resolution as high as 5K before reconstruction, which shows up as a noticeably cleaner image at distance. The Pro also gets improved ambient occlusion and higher-resolution reflections, giving environments a bit more depth. The real omission applies to both consoles: there is no 120fps mode, which stings in an extraction shooter where response time is currency. If you have a Pro, this is the better-looking version at the same frame rate; on base PS5 nothing about the experience is compromised.
Graphics modes on PlayStation 5 Pro
PSSR from a much higher internal resolution plus better ambient occlusion and reflections; the missing 120fps mode is the one real gap for an extraction shooter.
PSSR added as a third anti-aliasing/upscaling option, plus improved ambient occlusion and higher-resolution reflections.
Single mode
PS5 ProUnverifiedSony states the Pro build renders from an internal resolution up to 5K, reconstructed by PSSR. Improved ambient occlusion and higher-resolution reflections versus base PS5.
Graphics modes on PlayStation 5
A locked 60fps competitive shooter, but with only one mode, no 120fps option and a softer reconstructed image than the Pro.
Single mode
PS5UnverifiedTwo anti-aliasing/upscaling options, CMAA and FSR; switching between them makes little visible difference in motion.
PS5 vs PS5 Pro
Side-by-side comparison of graphics modes, resolution and technical features.
Same locked 60fps on both, with the Pro spending its extra power on image quality: PSSR reconstruction from a far higher internal resolution, better ambient occlusion and sharper reflections.
